Received mine a few days ago.
Go to download the 1.07 firmware with telnet enabled
1. Open a command window, run the command: telnet 192.168.XXX.XXX (192.168.XXX.XXX is your NAS ip)
2. Issue a command: smartctl -d /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/disc (this disables hard drive SMART)
3. Issue a command: smartctl -e /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/disc (this enables hard drive SMART)
4. Issue a command: hdparm -S120 /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/disc (-S120 option set the spindown time to 120 X 5 = 600 seconds)
I am now telnet-ing at work to my home network remotely and issue the command below every five minutes to check the standby status of NAS.:
hdparm -C /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/disc
You need to set port forwarding in your home router to have telnet access to your home NAS.
So far everything is OK. After 600 seconds, the hard drive went into standby as expected and has been in the standby state till now (3 hours). The trick here is: turn off hard drive SMART first then turn it on again. I think it’s related to some SMART configuration when the NAS reboots. When you disable and enable SMART, it’s now re-set to its default configuration.
You need to repeat steps 1-4 each time when you restart your NAS.
